Our goal is simple...collect 400 to 500 fat tire adult bicycles in good working order, parts, and accessories and ship them to a village in Africa.
The initial objective of the B4H Comox Valley chapter was to support the Karamoja Bicycle Initiative*, which seeks to deliver 25,000 bicycles to this remote area in north eastern Uganda over the next five years. However, various circumstances made that objective cost prohibitive and instead, for the first container, B4H Comox Valley partnered with Africycle (www.africycle.org) and B4H - Victoria. Our first container of bikes is to be shipped to Zomba, Malawi on December 11, 2015.
*Check out Karamoja Bicycle Initiative at Vimeo. com (https://vimeo.com/126580108) for more information on this initiative.
2. The Process:
- Gather the bicycles, spare parts, tools, bike trailers, panniers, etc. from donors like you.* - Store the bikes until 400 to 500 are ready to be shipped. - Purchase the shipping container ($5,000). - Ship the container to Uganda ($12,000 to $15,000). - Do it again!
* Although we are located in the Comox Valley, we hope to collect bicycles from Nanaimo to Port Hardy.
